What is an essential oil?

Essential oils are products obtained from natural raw materials of plant origin, by steam distillation, by mechanical processes, or by dry distillation, after separation of the aqueous phase — if any — by physical processes. They are mainly used in aromatherapy, medicine, personal care products, fragrances, and food and drink flavourings.

Are your essential oils 100% natural and pure?

Essential oils are dear to our hearts; they are the reason why the Escentina adventure started back in 1949. By definition, essential oils should always be 100% pure and natural. However, some essential oils might not be 100% pure even if still 100% natural, as sometimes producers add or recombine fractions of distillation (blend with isolates) to boost the olfactive profile of the oil or comply to a given specification. So, while not all essential oils on the market are 100% pure and natural, we, at Escentina, are committed to providing only 100% pure and natural essential oils (genuine).

Where do your essential oils come from?

Escentina sources sustainable, high-quality essential oils worldwide, ensuring traceability and ethical supply chain practices. We prioritize environmental respect and support local communities for a sustainable and ethical future. We do not produce our own essential oils. Instead, we carefully select essential oils that have been expertly crafted by skilled suppliers.

Our sourcing is made for 95% with about 10 key suppliers, with whom we have been working for more than 20 years on average (some, right from the start of the company in 1949). Even so, we audit and assess our suppliers annually to maintain high standards. By working with like-minded suppliers, we can be confident that the oils we offer are not only of high quality but also ethically and environmentally responsible.

What are your raw material quality control measures?

Every single raw material goes through our incoming quality control procedure and is checked according to our specifications. For essential oils, in addition, our perfumers perform an olfactive test to ensure a high quality year after year. This is very important for us, especially for our natural perfumes range, where the number of ingredients is usually much lower than in a normal perfume, meaning that a small olfactive difference in one raw material has a bigger impact on the overall olfactive profile of the perfume.

Are your essential oils certified?

We are dedicated to providing our clients with the highest quality essential oils, with some also meeting the requirements of pharmacopoeias, such as PhEur, meaning they can be used as active ingredients (Pharma items) or excipient ingredients (Compendia portfolio) in pharmaceutical products.

All of our oils are 100% pure and natural, and we offer different qualities such as:

  • Our high-quality essential oils are 100% pure and natural, derived from a variety of plants without any additives. We source these oils exclusively from trusted, often long-term partners renowned for their exceptional quality.
  • Our organic essential oils are derived from plants that have been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or harmful chemicals. These essential oils are certified by regulatory bodies such as the Swiss accreditation body Bio-Inspecta. Organic certification guarantees that the plants used to produce the essential oils were cultivated in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
  • Compendia essential oils adhere to stringent pharmacopoeia monographs, making them ideal for use as excipients in pharmaceutical applications. They meet the highest quality standards to ensure their suitability in various pharmaceutical formulations.
  • Pharma essential oils, also known as medicinal essential oils, are those used for therapeutic purposes. Pharma essential oils may be used in pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter medicines, and other healthcare products. These oils are rigorously regulated by health authorities and meet the stringent requirements of pharmacopoeias like PhEur, making them suitable for use as both active and excipient ingredients in pharmaceutical products.
